CentroNía first opened its doors 35 years ago in the heart of DC’s Columbia Heights neighborhood. In the time since, we have collaborated with an active network of community partners to raise funds and better serve the children and families who rely on our programs and services. Many of the local businesses and organizations we partner with have roots that run just as deep as ours. The Compres family, for example, has brought authentic Dominican food to DC’s Columbia Heights neighborhood for decades. Even before their restaurant Los Hermanos opened, the family sold food by popular request to a largely Latino community nostalgic for the home-cooked flavors of their youth. Family recipes—including mangú recently voted the best in D.C.—have kept customers coming back, and over the years the family business has become a beloved neighborhood staple.

With twin brothers Aris and Raymond at the helm, Los Hermanos continues to find opportunities to support others. While small businesses like theirs have been under increasing pressure over the past year and half due to social restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, they still made it a point to deliver meals to frontline workers and to support local civic engagement. The brothers also support early childhood and family services for low-income families through their longstanding partnership with CentroNía, most notably through their participation in our signature ¡Buen Provecho! A Taste of Columbia Heights fundraiser.

CentroNía and Los Hermanos commemorated this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month through Los Hermanos Community Days, during which the restaurant pledged 100% of proceeds from meals purchased from CentroNía supporters. The first Community Day took place on October 8th, while the second will be announced following the completion of the restaurant’s current kitchen renovation. We are excited to have Los Hermanos as our fundraising partner and, of course, our go-to for arroz con gandules!

While the pandemic pressed the pause button on ¡Buen Provecho! A Taste of Columbia Heights, mark your calendars for the return of this popular tasting tour in October 2022, when we can enjoy a fun evening celebrating the excellence of diverse local restaurants like Los Hermanos together.
