On Friday, June 11, 2021, CentroNía had the honor of welcoming Vice President Kamala Harris to our Columbia Road site!
Children in one of CentroNía’s pre-kindergarten classes were excited to chat and draw with the Vice President, who also joined the class in a sing-along. Vice President Harris then spoke to a crowd of CentroNía parents, leaders and champions for early learning, stressing the importance of investing in high quality childcare to support the country’s successful economic recovery.
Vice President Harris made several exciting announcements about the American Rescue Plan that will support children and families. Among them, she shared that monthly checks will start arriving to families in July under the new Child Tax Credit, which is estimated to lift half of America’s poorest children out of poverty. In order for as many families as possible to benefit from this support, she announced that June 21 will be “Child Tax Credit Awareness Day” to help raise awareness of the program.
CentroNía staff and families were thrilled to hear that policymakers recognize the urgent need to rebuild child care supply and support access for working families. COVID-19 has exposed the fragility of our country’s child care system. Many centers have closed their doors permanently. However, today a majority of Americans from across the political spectrum support investing in working families so that we can build back better.
For almost 35 years, our inclusive approach to early learning and wraparound support services has helped families access high-quality child care and community resources and gain the skills they need to improve their lives and the lives of their children. This is especially critical now, as our families work to recover from the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
