This summer CentroNía Maryland partnered up with Brighter Bites a nonprofit organization that partners with schools, camps, and afterschool programs to bring fresh produce and nutrition education to families who live in the underserved communities we partner with. The program started from July 3rd to August 14th every Wednesday and was lead by our Food and Wellness Department and our Family Engagement team at Maryland who worked together with 150 families from Prince George’s county and 11 lead teachers to provide nutrition education consisting of handbooks, recipe cards and healthy tip sheets. They also coordinated fun food experiences that included a healthy recipe tasting for everyone to try together when they picked up their produce at dismissal.
In classrooms each lead teacher did a nutrition activity with the CATCH curriculum for Pre-K and also on Wednesdays received a produce bag to show the children and had an activity. That bag mimics the food items inside the bag the families took home. Families would pick up the child from the classroom, sign in and Brighter Bites had a recipe tasting then they would.pick up the bags.
Parents, childrens and teachers enjoyed this unique experience and we look forward to continuing this great partnership with our friends over a Brighter bites.
