Volunteer Program

Dear Prospective Tutor:

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with our reading and math program. This is the fourth year CentroNía's has offered a structured reading and math one-on-one tutoring program to children in the local community. Nearly all students in our program perform below their grade level in reading and math. With your help, our organization will provide students the tools and motivation necessary to avoid falling into the cycle of drug abuse, crime, unemployment, and poverty that afflicts so many of their parents' generation. The ability to read well, to excel in school, and the desire to learn are essential for breaking this cycle, and we are glad that you want to join us in this effort.

Our highly-structured reading and math programs are offered on Saturday morning for our elementary school students and on Wednesday evenings for our adolescent students. We provide comprehensive training to all tutors to ensure their preparedness and effectiveness. Our training and our curriculum have a proven track record of success. Thanks to everyone's hard work, last year's students increased their reading and math levels by an average of 1.5 grade levels. In addition, students' reading comprehension improved by an average of almost three grade levels! We hope that you will be a part of our continued success.

In this packet, you will find:

  • Information about CentroNía
  • List of Frequently Asked Questions by volunteers
  • Tutor flyer to distribute or post at your organization.
  • Tutor job description
  • Tutor training dates
  • Saturday and Wednesday tutoring schedules

We appreciate your interest in CentroNía's tutoring programs. Since last year, CentroNía's program size has doubled and our need for tutors has grown substantially. We know that you will enjoy being a tutor. Watching a child learn to read and begin to perform previously impossible math problems is an amazing experience.

Please read the materials, choose a program and training date convenient to your schedule, and call us to register for the program.  We look forward to pairing you with your future student. If you have any questions, please contact me by telephone at (202) 332-4200 Ext. 178 or by email at irivera@centronia.org

Thank you very much. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

Irma Rivera
