Volunteer FAQs

What is my commitment to the program?
Your initial commitment is to attend a reading and math training session and an orientation session. Tutoring sessions are held once a week on Saturday mornings for two hours for the Saturday Morning Tutoring program or you may prefer to tutor adolescent students on Wednesday night. We do not meet on National holidays and we generally follow District of Columbia's public school schedule.

Who does the program serve?
The program serves elementary school students (grades 1-5) and teenage students (grades 6-12) enrolled in the School Age Program at CentroNía . The center's participants are primarily Latino and African American.

How are students chosen to participate in the program?
The participating students are selected based on reading scores from the Stanford 9 (SAT-9) exams and referrals by teachers and/or counselors.

Where is the program located?
We are located at 1420 Columbia Road, NW, one block from the Columbia Heights Metro Station on the Green Line. Limited parking is available on the side streets.

How was the program developed?
The program is modeled after For Love of Children's (FLOC) successful Neighborhood Tutoring Program, which combines singing, spelling, reading, and writing techniques to assist students.

How are students assessed?
The students are assessed regularly by the site coordinators to guide instruction and to track progress.

How are families involved in the program?
Families are strongly encouraged to complete follow-up reading activities with their children. They are also asked to attend special events and activities designed for families during the program. Reading Workshops will also be offered throughout the year.

Do I need to be fluent in Spanish to serve as a tutor?
Spanish speaking skills are not required.

How will I know what to do?
Training is offered and support staff are always available on site.
