Why help?
Despite our strengths and resources, the need is still enormous. We have significant waiting lists, indicating that demand for our services far exceeds our ability to provide these services. (More than 200 babies are on the waiting list for our infant/toddler program, 165 children are waiting in line for our early childhood program, and 55 junior and high school students are waiting to enroll in our Youth Development program.) More than 60% of our families have experienced increased difficulty in securing and maintaining viable employment given the economic downturn and ongoing gentrification in the neighborhoods we serve. Moreover, our families have been devastated by the drastic cuts in childcare subsidies, which leave many families, particularly the working poor, with little choice but to leave children alone or poorly supervised. CentroNía provides tuition subsidies (or fee waivers) on a sliding scale, but these are not enough given the current economic climate. For many families, affordable, accessible quality childcare is the stabilizing factor that allows them to work, go to school, and receive the training that will allow them to improve their overall economic well-being. Quality child care and other services, such as those offered at CentroNía, are proven approaches for reducing income inequality. In the long term, quality childcare is also the best overall predictor of school readiness, and ultimately, of family economic success.
