Less than two months after opening its new site, CentroNía was selected to receive a new playground by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to building playgrounds across the United States. The playground was built in one day on Friday, November 4, 2005 thanks to the support of 200 volunteers rom the community (Carlos Rosario Public Charter School, Capital One, American University and, of course, CentroNía teachers, staff, and parents). The new playground features state-of-the-art play equipment from PlayWorld™ systems, including a large climbing structure; music, art, and science educational panels; a covered outdoor classroom space; and a garden space designed by local artist Rebecca Lemos. CentroNía’s new playground is the first of 12 “SMART Spot” playgrounds to be built in 2006. These playgrounds are sponsored by PepsiCo as part of the launch of its SMART lifestyle campaign to promote a healthy, active lifestyle and smart food choices. Model and spokeswoman Cindy Crawford was on hand during the Build Day to promote the campaign.
