On Saturday October 21, 2006, CentroNía will host the third in a series of three literacy conferences under the umbrella “Literacy: A Priority for Everyone / Alfabetización: Una prioridad de todos.” CentroNía is committed to improving literacy at every level—at home, at school and in the community. The first conference, held December 3, 2005 at the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School, attracted nearly one hundred parents, educators, administrators and policymakers with the theme, “Developing language in young children.” The second conference, “Advancing Literacy, Strengthening Families/ Promover la Alfabetización, Fortalece a las Familias,” was developed by a committee of parents along with CentroNía staff. Parents and children attended morning sessions together, with workshops ranging from cooking and making artful story boxes to sign language and Family Book Clubs. Afternoon sessions for adults covered more in-depth subjects such as myths and facts about ADHD, predatory lending, and advocating for better bilingual education.
This third conference, Building Literacy in K-3 Environments, will focus on improving literacy among children who are just beginning formal education. Workshops for educators, parents and administrators will cover a range of subjects from assessment methods, innovative teaching tools, as well as looking at the current debate over bilingual schooling.
